Key species - Sri Lanka has 33 endemic species which are often the key target species for serious bird watchers. There are a further 53 species that are endemic to India and Sri Lanka, and some of these are easier to see in Sri Lanka than India. Mammals, reptiles and invertebrates also feature on our targets list.

Itinerary

Experience the Wild Sri Lanka 16 day birding tour – February 2018

Guests arrive at Katunayake Airport, overnight accommodation at the nearby Tamarind Tree Resort. Meet your guides, Upali Ekanayake and Mike Jarvis.

Day 1 KATUNAYAKE to HABARANA

Pick up from the Tamarind Tree Resort near Katunayake Airport.  We make several birding stops along the way as we pass through Minuwangoda, Giriulla, Narammala, Kurunegala, Galewela, Dambulla and arrive at Habarana. We spend the afternoon birding around the gardens and nearby lake. 

Each night over dinner we review the days sightings using your complimentary Checklist Journal and preview the next days locations and targets.

Day 2 HABARANA to MANNAR

After an early breakfast at TOC, we proceed to Mannar, passing through Anuradhapura and Medawachchiya, birding along the way. We spend the afternoon exploring wetlands on Talaimannar Road.

Day 3 Explore MANNAR

We spend the morning exploring the Vankalai Bird Sanctuary and then the afternoon exploring Mannar Causeway and the Thallady Pond area.

Day 4 Explore MANNAR

We spend the morning exploring the Uramalai and Adam’s Bridge area. In the afternoon we explore the Poonaryn Road area.

Day 5 MANNAR to HABARANA

We search good birding locations around Mannar and then head back to Habarana via Medawachchiya and Anuradhapura.

Day 6 HABARANA to KANDY

After breakfast proceed to Kandy stopping in Sigiriya Sanctuary area for a short birding session. We visit the Peradeniya Royal Botanic Garden in the afternoon.

Day 7 KANDY to NUWARA ELIYA

After an early breakfast we visit Udawattakele Sanctuary and then proceed to Nuwara Eliya. In the afternoon we explore the Nuwara Eliya area and Victoria Park.

Day 8 NUWARA ELIYA  – Explore HORTON PLAINS NATIONAL PARK 

A predawn start carrying picnic breakfast to reach Horton Plains National Park at first light. We spend the morning exploring Horton Plains National Park looking for the highland endemics. In the afternoon we explore Hakgala botanical gardens.

Dinner and accommodation at Nuwara Eliya. 

Day 9 NUWARA ELIYA to TISSAMAHARAMA

After breakfast head to Tissamaharama via Bandarawela, Ella and Wellawaya. In the afternoon we explore the Tissa wetlands and the surrounding area.

Day 10 Explore YALA NATIONAL PARK

A predawn start carrying picnic breakfast to do an early morning jeep safari in Yala National Park. In the afternoon we explore the brackish water wetlands between Tissa and Yala.

Day 11 TISSAMAHARAMA to UDA WALAWE

Another predawn start carrying picnic breakfast to do an early morning jeep safari in Bundala National Park then head to Uda Walawe National Park via Pannagamuwa and Tanamalwila.

Day 12 UDA WALAWE to SINHARAJA

We take another jeep safari in Uda Walawe National Park with picnic breakfast and afterward head to Sinharaja Rain Forest. We explore Sinharaja Rainforest periphery in the evening.

Day 13 Explore SINHARAJA

After early breakfast explore the Sinharaja Rain Forest.

Day 14 Explore KITULGALA

We leave Sinharaja for Kitulgala via Weddagala, Kalwana, Nivithigala, Ratnapura, Avissawella, Karawanella and Yatiyantota.

Day 15 Explore KITULGALA

We explore several areas around Kitulgala.

Day 16 KITULGALA TO KATUNAYAKE

We depart Kitulgala for Katunayake via Yatiyantota, Karawanella, Ruwanwella, Urapola, Nittambuwa and Minuwangoda. 

Final dinner together and accommodation at Katunayake.  

 Please Note: The above itinerary is based on the outcomes of many previous tours to the areas described. Each season is different and as various wildlife observing opportunities arise and depending on the preferences of the group, adjustments will be made.

Inclusions - Accommodation double/twin sharing in standard rooms, travel in air-conditioned vehicle with an experienced English speaking chauffeur, local ornithologist and ETW guide, entrance fees to all sites and national parks mentioned and jeep hire, breakfast and dinners each day including group dinner at end of tour on day 16, bottled water. Exclusions - Pre and post tour accommodation, flights to and from Sri Lanka, airport tax, travel insurance, visa fees, items of a personal nature such as drinks, laundry, tips, etc. lunches thoughout the tour entry fees for sites mentioned other than included, early check-in and late check out.
